Horn of Africa Famine

Posted in Uncategorized at 12:21 PM by inspirationsbysd

On July 20th, 2011 the UN officially declared a famine in East Africa, resulting from severe droughts that has taken thousands of lives. The three main countries in current affect are Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia, but other surrounding areas are in threat as well, urgent help in this matter is needed as millions of lives are in crisis.

It breaks my heart to see little kids unable to receive the basic needs of clean water and food on daily basis, no one should suffer this way! here is how you can help:

UNICEF

Word Food Programme

Oxfam

a little goes a long way, remember that whatever you can spare will be of great help!

Meritxell Duran Exhibition: Barcelona, Spain

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:08 PM by inspirationsbysd

We stumbled upon this local artist, Mertixell Duran while walking around the streets in Avinguda Diagonal, the sculptures instantly drew us in. The artist was actually there, and they were nice enough to show us around, I think we had the most fun in this small space because we got to look at the pieces up close, take pictures and I even got in inside one of her sculptures (below) lol  She works in one of the local newspapers as an illustrator and also has her own projects which consist of mainly sculptures.

I loved her work so much I had to get something, of course her sculptures price range were $2000 to $12000 so the only thing we could afford was the cooky messenger bags shaped as a bear/baby’s head it came in several colors but I went with cement grey, the artist was actually wearing one in black she told me that while wearing it on your back, people walking behind you will be smiling at your bag lol

Chupa Chups Ice Cream

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:55 PM by inspirationsbysd

While in Spain, I spotted a huge Chupa Chups lolly pop in the ice cream freezer, turns out it was not misplaced there but in fact is a chupa Chups ice cream pop! A huge one too! I didn’t get to try it, I had a feeling there was a small ice cream cup inside the plastic lolly pop and felt wasn’t worth trying, but looks like fun!

Love Padlocks on Paris Bridge

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:40 PM by inspirationsbysd

While crossing a bridge in Paris, I think we were heading towards Musee d’Orsay if I am not mistake, that is when I spotted hundreds and hundreds of padlocks on the bridge’s railing. Some were engraved with initials, others wrote the date they were here, it apparently is a common custom between lovers not only in Paris, but world-wide (that I did not know of! lol) to lock the padlock and throw the key with your loved one to symbolize eternal love …sweet! Too bad we didn’t have one on us that day! If you are ever passing by, and into the mushy romantic stuff, then make sure you have one on you. Even though it appears that they may not be there forever, the city is thinking of removing them and placing them on a metal tree, since the locks on the bridge is an eye sore!

Espace Dali: Paris, France

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:39 PM by inspirationsbysd

Good things must come to an end, and our summer vacation ended, I am back home and finally posting! I will be posting a bit on some of the places we liked most during our trip, so expect a bit of that in the upcoming posts. My husband and I visited Espace Dali, an exhibition that hosts over 300 of Salvador Dali’s work in Paris, France. It is a small space honestly but really houses the most beautiful and unique pieces of his work from sketches, paintings, sculptures to furniture! The art work displayed in the exhibition allows the visitors a peak inside the great mind of Dali, a collection of melted clocks represent his thoughts on time and the reality of time melting like a piece of cheese.

Moving on, you get to view his take on the wonderful character of Alice from Alice in Wonderland, we got to see Dali’s interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice, interestingly enough he helped with the Disney animation for the movie Alice in Wonderland! Dali was so interested in the character Alice that she appears in every painting in his Alice in Wonderland series, you can spot her jumping rope in the paint work.

The exhibition also has the bronze sculpture of Alice with her jumping rope, at a closer inspection you will notice that her hands and face are covered with leaves and flowers.

An other symbol Dali liked to use in his art work is the crutch, you can find it in his paintings as well as his sculptures, very often the figures leaning on crutches etc. The crutch, to Dali, represents reality providing his pieces spiritual and physical support, one of my favorite has to be the “Woman Aflame” piece in which a woman without facial features leans back while several crutches support her back, while the front part of her body is completely covered with open drawers, the faceless figure represent to Dali a woman’s true beauty …mystery.

The red lips sofa is inspired by Mae West’s lips.

Over all the exhibition was interesting, very small but has most of his important art works, if you are ever in Montmartre, in Paris and you enjoy Surrealist art, then this place is a must see!

Swims Galoshes and Shoes

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:30 PM by inspirationsbysd

While shopping with my husband in Spain we noticed some bright-colored rubber loafers at El Corte Ingles, my husband, who is into the preppy style is always looking for a funky twist to his loafers, pants and shirts so these shoes screamed his name and upon a closer inspection we noticed that the shoe appear to be waterproof and breathable, the shoes had a tag “swims” on them and came in all kinds of colors. The Norwegian designer behind these rubber soles explains that he was used to protecting his shoes in the rainy cities and wanted to reinvent the boring old galoshes into a wearable and trendy shoe that keeps you warm and in style at the same time, and then came the rubber loafers that are perfect for the beach or on a boat, or just wearing them anywhere where you’d prefer not to ruin your nice loafers.

Swims also caters to the city woman’s needs, they have what they call “the City woman’s slipper” which covers the heels and has a rubber sole to prevent slipping, I think this is perfect even in Kuwait even though we don’t get much rain but I hate to wear my satin/nice heels only to land my feet in a muddy puddle!

I am loving these shoes, I think it’s a great idea to reinvent the practical item of clothing and make it trendy and stylish, what do you guys think?

Sara D.
